Was humiliation one of the Labors of Hercules?

Typically, statues of mythological figures portray them looking heroic, or courageous, or at least wise. But Hercules, here, seems to evoke the sentiment, "Tell me this isn't happening."

It's not hard to see why. The sculptor has whacked off both arms, draped a plush-toy lion over his shoulders and dressed him up in a gold & turquoise skirt with a tacky stairway bannister as a codpiece. No wonder his eyeballs are rolling in despair.

The ship was dismantled at Greenport in 1884. The figurehead can now be seen, opposite the Village Green, in Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y. Come to Long Island -- Land of History."
